Xavier after receiving the Benemerenti Medal for services to Catholic education
Xavier Bowers was presented with the Benemerenti Medal, awarded by His Holiness Pope Leo XIV. The Benemerenti Medal is one of the highest honours bestowed by the Catholic Church upon members of the clergy and laity who have demonstrated long and exceptional service to the Church and to Catholic life. The award recognises distinguished commitment, dedication and faithful service, and it is a fitting tribute to Mr Bowers' many years of leadership and contribution to Catholic education. To receive this papal honour is a significant achievement and a source of great pride for both Mr Bowers and the wider Mount Carmel community.

I am writing to wish you well on the occasion of your retirement from the headship at Mount Carmel Roman Catholic High School.
On behalf of the advisory service, and the Local Authority more generally, I should like to thank you for your considerable service as the headteacher at Mount Carmel. Your leadership over the last 14 years has ensured that the school has flourished, achieving excellent feedback from Ofsted in 2021 and under the framework in 2025. The excellent achievements of your pupils, both in the qualifications they have gained and the progress they make from when they join Mount Carmel, are a testament to the culture of care and high standards you have led over many years.
Your wider contribution to the education system and to young people in Lancashire should also be noted. Your willingness to share best practice with colleagues in other schools, members of our advisory team, as well as through your contribution as Chair of District 11 secondary headteachers, membership of the LASSH executive and diocesan networks, will ensure that your work will have a positive impact on the lives of young people in Lancashire for years to come. This was clearly exemplified in your successful Executive Headship at All Saints, providing strong leadership and stabilising the school during a challenging period.
